VOCATIONAL EXPERIENCE

2002 – To this day

Lettering Technology Enhancements and Digital Rights Management  at Compucon sa.

Details: In 2002, joined a software house developing CAD/CAM systems used in industrial embroidery making. I work as a software engineer at Compucon SA (www.compucon.gr). My main focus is enhancing the Lettering functionality of their flagship product EOS. (Lettering is a function-shell similar to MsWordArt, which produces embroidered texts on Garments. Moreover, I designed and implemented Compucon's new Digital Rights Management System - a CardJava smartcard solution on a USB card reader dongle, that supports anti-piracy functions, licencing enforcement, software leasing and connection to the company's billing server, without the need of a Certification Authority.

2000-2002 Military Service in the Greek Army

Details: In July 2000, I joined the Signal Corps of the Greek Army (Telecommunications, Radar operation, electronic warfare); I was immobilized from active military service on June 24th 2002, having reached the rank of 2nd-Lieutenant. My military duties involved operation of cryptographic radio networks and administrating a secure email system (Piersia) used by the Greek Army.

1999-2000 Development of embedded software in C++ for Getronics TT41 eWallet payment terminals using IBM Chipper Smartcards (Advanced Software Technologies ltd)

Details: In 1999 I got involved in designing and developing embedded software in C++ for Dutch multi-ePayment terminals Getronics TT41 (eWallet applications) using IBM Chipper Smartcards + Landis & Gyr Phoenix Security modules; under the PXROS real-time, multitasking operating system for SIEMENS micro-controllers, using a cross-compiler development platform. I worked as a Senior Software Engineer at the firm 'Advanced Software Technologies' ( Technology Park Thessaloniki Greece - C/P Mr Peter Van Der Werf +3031-498.289).

In my work I used advanced cryptographic algorithms, SPDH-E distributed network communication protocol over ISDN to interface with banking clearing centers and Smartcard application development tools. In the development process, I used ObjectTeam CASE tool in an advanced Object Oriented programming methodology framework (GENESIS).

The work in A.S.T has been performed under a subcontracting agreement with the Dutch firm Getronics. Apart from the actual programming, I produced software specifications and performed quality assurance procedures.

Using the know-how accumulated on the implementation of secure Smartcard applications, I worked on a business plan and subsequent design of a suite of software applications under the commercial name CryptoSmart-CA, used for the operation of proprietary Trusted Key Distribution Centers over public or private networks ; utilizing Smartcard authentication technologies; for establishing secure cryptographic sessions over LANs and WANs (secure virtual private networking, corporate crypto-email etc).

1996-1997 Development of automated crossword puzzle builders in Greek; for clients from the Greek entertainment publishing industry

Details: In 1996 , along with a small group of associates, I got involved in the implementation of software tools for building automatically sophisticated crossword puzzles in Greek, marketed to clients from the Greek entertainment publishing industry. Our group used extensive terminology databases and specialized software to develop tools for building crossword puzzles with unconventional contours, (eg heart, daisy, cartoon character shaped crossword puzzles), as well as terminology focused ones (e.g. cosputing, show business etc.). These were sold to magazines, periodicals, newspapers etc.

1995-1996 Consulting work at S.E.S Ltd - a technology consulting firm

Details: In 1995, I joined a consulting firm (Scientific Engineering Services Ltd.), where I performed a variety of tasks, ranging from market research, E.U. policy monitoring, to software consulting.

In S.E.S, I developed a software system for handling multimedia information circulation in a networked office environment. The system, code-named Concept 21 was developed as a user-friendly open application to serve office information circulation and high quality hypertextual archiving. It was built around a smart search engine able to provide transparent document, picture and video delivery from the firm's archives to anyone who had the accessright to obtain it, whether the user was connected locally in the LAN, or remotely either by a dialup-line or through INTERNET.

In that same firm I worked on a feasibility study, evaluating different implementation approaches towards the development of affordable add-in uninterrupted power supply sources to commercial elevator systems; and alternative hardware approaches to allow elevator users to avoid entrapment at the occurrence of mains power failures.

1994-1997 Development of LexiGraf - a software environment for the desktop production of multilingual and bilingual terminology dictionaries in print (Aristotle Univ. Thessaloniki Greece)

Details: In 1994, I developed a specialized DTP application base under MS-Windows (LexiGraf), able to maintain large multilingual terminology databases out of which multilingual and bilingual dictionaries are automatically produced in print.

My client's terminology resources consisted of an extensive science terminology collection in English, French, German and Greek; out of which a four-language natural sciences dictionary and a multitude of bilingual ones have been formed and published. (University Studio Press SA - c/p Mr Andreas Michalis Tel +30 31 209837).

Development specifications for LexiGraf involved automating the creation of two-volume multilingual dictionaries using reference indexes; a technique used to reduce their print-size by half. By combining languages into pairs, bilingual dictionaries are automatically produced, along with corresponding electronic versions of all the above.

Currently, work is being done at integrating OCR tools into LexiGraf for low cost updating of existing paper-dictionaries by their respective copyright holders. (c/p Mr. Berts Stepanian, Tel +30-31-99.78.62/ fax +30-31-99.84.19).

LexiGraf was presented to the public at the INFOSYSTEM HITECH 96 Automation and computer systems trade fair in Thessaloniki Greece. It also was demonstrated at the 'Current Research Information Systems '98 event, (March 12-14, 1998 Luxembourg) organized by the DG XIII of the European Commission. http://egnatia.ee.auth.gr/~yhat/yiannis/

1994-1995 Development of BW-Controller - software controlling industrial weighing balance systems, built using microprocessors and pressure sensors (Delta Electronics ltd)

Details: In 1994, I was assigned the task of developing control software for a commercial industrial weighing balance system, marketed by Delta Electronics Ltd. (Contact Mr. P Bachtsevanoglou Tel +30-31-796.195). The product, in its pre-production form, was presented to the public at that year's 'International Trade Fair of Thessaloniki'. In its operation, the BW-Controller system, delivered basic functions such as weight and data recording, query-by-example searches, summed-up selected weight records; as well as advanced functions such as automatically communicating the recorded data to the warehouse management software of prospective buyers. The developed system allowed full control of weighing and recording functions, either from a PC, or from a remotely positioned hardware unit. An upgraded version has been designed, allowing the control of a star-network of industrial weighing balances from a single PC.

1993-1994 Development of 'Metropolis' - an advanced document processing system used by Dioceses of the Orthodox Church of Greece in marriage- license granting. (Hypersoft Sa)

Details: In 1993, I participated in the development of an advanced document processing system to be used by the Orthodox Church of Greece for dealing effectively with marriage licensing procedures. The firm developing the project was a Greek software house - Hypersoft sa. The software tool used was an event driven, graphical, relational database system for the Apple Macintosh computers - OMNIS by Blyth corp. The aim of the project was to relieve the ministers in parishes, as well as administrators at higher clerical levels, from all of the filing and paper work related to marriage licensing; indeed a complex and tedious bureaucratic task, by letting mixed networks of Macs and PCs store, process data and finally produce official documents, plus the necessary protocol records.

1992-1993 Development of VBASEII - a software application for optimizing the organizational aspects of municipal pre-election campaigns.

Details: This project, which was initiated in 1992, made the attempt to optimize the organizational aspects of municipal pre-election campaigns. The idea proposed to prospective customers, was to maximize their vote share by approximating the voter group that makes the difference -the Undecided. The first application of the product was conducted on a near-by elective community. A database of the current voters was created, as well as a database of voters- to-be for the next two elective campaigns for future reference and planning.

A special DBMS application (VBASEII) was developed to handle the processing task. The voter databases were updated with data, such as social activities, influence enjoyed by individuals, profession, education level, geographic location of residence etc. Out of these data bases, using specialised applications, I was able to extract a wide variety of information for my clients, allowing them to optimize the campaign effort. Associates and supporters acting for my clients, were assigned to different age voter groups, under defined geographical specifications and influence anticipation, to spread the word effectively. The collected data, were subsequently utilized by a consulting firm (F.E.R.E Consultants Ltd) for causes, such as population growth projections, estimates of population density at different areas of the community, social and economic evaluations - for optimised civil work planning. (Contact Mr. G Arvanitidis tel +30-31-796.333)

Additional to pre-mentioned activities, I have been exposed to a wide variety of informatics problems, logistics and optimization issues, 3D computer graphics, real time control systems and their integration to computers, LAN and WAN modeling; network application programming and computer communications.

Concurrently, I am doing my best in being well informed in the management practices and operation research tools, necessary to optimize informatics project developments._
